Just around the corner of the famous Skógafoss waterfall, hides another gem – Kvernufoss waterfall. It is not as grand as Skógafoss and, as a result, does not attract the same crowds of tourists. Kvernufoss is very pleasantly located between hills of a scenic gorge.
It is very easy to find the trailhead that leads to the waterfall. It starts on the far side of the large parking lot near Skógar Museum. Turn left towards the mountains and follow the trail. The views on the way there are quite nice and picturesque.
The waterfall looks impressive from the front, but there is also a way to walk behind the waterfall and enjoy it from a different angle. The only problem is that the path that leads to behind the waterfall is very slippery, so some walking poles would be helpful. I did not take any with me, so I had to improvise and use my tripod as a walking stick.
