The Glorious Ruins of Glastonbury Abbey
Glastonbury Abbey fell neatly into the theme of our England road trip — to explore mysterious English sites. This is where in 1184 the monks dug up the bones of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere. At least that’s what the legend says. In reality, most likely, the monks needed to generate some extra income from pilgrimage. Once the abbey was very prosperous, but then, unfortunately, fell victim to Henry VIII’s reformation of the Church of England. It lost all its riches and now only the ruins remain.
We had a great time exploring the grounds and finally decided to take a break and have some cream tea at the cafe near the Lady Chapel.
